As the CPUSA slides off into ideological, philosophical and political obscurity and isolation, we in Houston have been privileged to witness the party in action, no pun intended. CPUSA leadership has received sharp criticism from Houston as well as around the country and across the globe. There has been no detectable response from leadership to the sharp criticism. However, there has been a recent flurry of self-destructive activity rather than any kind of logical, reasonable advocacy of their untenable positions or any attempts to engage in fair and open dialogue and debate.
The CPUSA, under the leadership of Sam Webb, has embarked upon tactics to deal with their local clubs which might be characterized as similar to the mindless game shows that people watch on TV. The script goes like this: anointed party leaders arrive unannounced in cities where there are clubs which challenge the political line of the leadership. At this point, they start the game show which might be called “Will the real Communist Party please stand up?” They typically meet with the most troubled and troublesome members of the club they are trying to dissolve. They also contact people who have contacted the party website recently. They meet with these people individually, not as a group. The attempt is to isolate the members of the original club and split off the weaker and newer members. As they meet with these individuals, the fun starts. They denounce the original club as not being recognized as a legitimate club of the CPUSA. They announce the formation of a new club which is fully recognized and anointed by CPUSA leadership. They attempt to peel off the members of the original club and fold them into the new club. They also seek to swallow the club’s resources with one gulp and attempt to slander the original club’s leadership. The end of the game show is always disappointing because only the most craven sycophants of the party leadership win the kiss of death from the CPUSA leadership. And kiss of death they do get. Once the fun is over, the new club is left to fend for itself without any support from leadership. Typically, these new clubs fade out quickly and cease to function.
In Houston, the story follows the rigid script as discussed in an earlier article by A. Shaw posted on this website.
This script has been played out in many cities and is currently playing in Houston and the Northeast and West. It is probably playing in other areas of the country as well.
In Houston, I am the elected chair of the Houston Communist Party. Leadership arrived in Houston on June 29, 2012 and started meeting individually with club members. They did not respond to an invitation issued by me on June 13, 2012 to plan and organize a meeting with all the members of the club. Instead, they contacted me by phone and e-mail on June 30, 2012 and proposed to meet with me individually and immediately. At the time they contacted me, I was in San Antonio on vacation with my wife. I responded that I was not available and that they should show me courtesy and respect when they request a meeting with me. I told them I would be happy to organize a meeting of the entire club to hold a reasonable and respectful dialogue with them, but needed advance notice in order to plan such a meeting. They persisted in only requesting an individual meeting with me. They made no mention of any charges against me in this contact. On July 10, 2012, one of the party leaders sent me an e-mail informing me that I had been “dropped” from membership in the CPUSA. In doing so, they clearly violated Article VII of the party constitution which reads:
ARTICLE VII – Disciplinary Procedures and Appeals
SECTION 1. Subject to the provisions of this Article, any member or officer of the Party may be reprimanded, put on probation, suspended for a specified period, removed from office, dropped or expelled from the Party for actions detrimental to the interests of the Party and the working class, for factionalism, for making false statements in an application for membership, for financial irregularities, or for advocacy or practice of racial, national or religious discrimination, or discrimination on the basis of gender or sexual orientation.
No action, including dropping, may be taken against a member without notifying him or her of the action and the reason for it. Assistance should be given to help comrades to overcome weaknesses and shortcomings, when possible.
SECTION 2. Subject to the provisions of this Article, any member shall be expelled from the Party who is a strikebreaker, a provocateur, engaged in espionage, an informer, or who advocates force and violence or terrorism, or who participates in the activities of any group which acts to undermine or overthrow any democratic institutions through which the majority of the American people can express their right to determine their destiny.
SECTION 3. Charges against individual members or committees may be made by any member or Party committee to the club of which the accused is a member or to the appropriate higher committee having jurisdiction.
All such charges shall be handled expeditiously by an elected trial committee of the club or appropriate higher body. The trial committee shall hear charges, make recommendations and then disband.
SECTION 4. All accused persons concerned in disciplinary cases, except publicly self-admitted informers and provocateurs, must be notified of the charges against them, shall have the right to appear, to bring witnesses, including non-members if agreed to by the trial committee, and to testify. The burden of proof shall be on the accusers.
SECTION 5. After hearing the report of the trial committee, the club or leading committee having jurisdiction shall have the right to decide by a two-thirds vote upon any disciplinary measure, including expulsion. Disciplinary measures taken by leading committees shall be reported to the club of each accused member. Higher bodies must be informed of all disciplinary actions above a reprimand. There shall be an automatic review of all expulsions by the next higher body.
SECTION 6. Any member or committee that has been subject to disciplinary action has the right to appeal to the next higher body up to the National Convention, whose decision shall be final. The National, State (or District) or other leading committee shall set a hearing within 60 days from the date of receipt of the appeal and notify the appellant of the hearing date. When, however, the appeal is to a State, District or National Convention, the appeal shall be acted upon by the Convention following the filing of the appeal, provided that such appeal is made at least 30 days prior to the convention.
So, in Houston, the game show evolved into a new twist. The new twist is “Will the real Communist please stand up?” It should be noted that the leader of the new, officially recognized club of the CPUSA, according to reports from party members in other parts of the country, is a former member of the Spartacist league in California. He has a history of campaigning against the United Farmworkers and called for workers to break the strike of the farmworkers because Cesar Chavez was a “bourgeois sellout.” This individual has not written a single article for the party press. I, on the other hand, have a history of writing hundreds of articles for the party press to include the People’s Weekly World and People’s World. Many of these articles were reproduced on the Texas Communist Party website. More recently, I have published articles in the Morning Star, People’s Voice and Unity, the paper of the Irish Communist Party.
The leader of the newly christened club in Houston has attacked me for not following “Democratic Centralism.” It should be remembered that Democratic Centralism refers to “diversity of opinion and unity of action.” Currently, the CPUSA viciously quashes any diversity of opinion and proposes no action which might unify the party. Indeed, leadership turned up its nose at an effort to overturn anti-Communist laws in Texas proposed by this writer. Instead of supporting this effort, they dropped me from membership in the party. Which side are they on?
One of the prominent members of the newly christened club contributed to the article posted on the Houston website entitled “Sam Webb: which side are you on?” Indeed, all club members fully supported the article at the time it was posted including the new leader of the split off sycophantic club. The treachery and hypocrisy of this new club created in the image of CPUSA leadership is obvious.
People in Houston are perplexed by the heavy-handed party process. They are having a hard time believing that national leadership can blow into town unannounced and collude with the sneakiest and most negative elements of the club to split and divide a functioning and growing club. They are not used to being robbed of their basic democratic rights and being subjected to the dictates of an Imperial CPUSA.
Although the party leadership has proposed the abandonment of basic party concepts such as the vanguard role of the party, class struggle, Leninism, democratic centralism and seeks to censor any discussion of party policy, a few individuals can always be enlisted in an attempt to undermine a truly working class organization. Indeed, people like me who disagree with the policy of supporting uncritically the imperialist Obama administration are quickly dropped from party membership without regard to the constitutional process. This says nothing about the destruction of the party press and publications and the failure to fight against anti-Communist laws across the country. This says nothing about the delivery of important party documents and artifacts to a bourgeois University for safekeeping. This says nothing about the failure of the party to run candidates for public office since the 1980s. This says nothing about the proposal of party leadership to drop the words “Communist” and “party.” This says nothing about the four international Communist Parties (Greece, Mexico, Canada and Germany) who have sharply, publicly and openly criticized the political line of the CPUSA.
The Houston Communist Party has been attacked from the left by anarchists and Trotskyites who have sought to demoralize us. We have been attacked by CPUSA national leadership. We have been attacked by right wing ideologues such as Glenn Beck. We view these attacks as confirmation that we are headed in the right direction. We are here to stay. We are growing. We will not back down. We will continue to stand up for the working class because we are of, by and for the working class. It is clear which side our attackers and detractors are on. It is clear which side we are on. Our interests and the interests of the CPUSA leadership are irreconcilable.
This tactic of meeting with newer Trot “members” who are unhappy with the marxist-leninist, pro-Soviet ,anti-Gorbachev direction of the Staten Island Club New York City (25 members) in the late eighties ( and deliberately bypassing the elected Exec of the club)was a test run of how these disgusting “paid bureaucratic comrades” were to handle forces hostile to their anti-Soviet, drift to the anti-communist center.
Again ,about 4 years ago, the Webbite faction took over the 30 year old Arts,Entertainment and Media Club of the CP in Manhattan, NY by dissolving the elected club leadership and “dropping” several of the older comrades under the guise of “streamling the clubs into larger formations”. The AEM Club was a bastion of pro-Sovietism, anti-revisionism and anti-Trotskyism and a thorn in the side of the social-democratic Webbite faction that illegally took over the party leaderhip with undemocratic elections that were blatently rigged at state conventions.
When those longtime communists who lived in the borough of Staten Island, NYC, reactivated their club ( started in 1971) the anti-Communist Webbite national “misleaders” refused to recognize the existence of the local club unless the cabal who took over the “million dollar fish bowl” at 23 St came down to S.I. to set up a “leadership” ( who lived in Brooklyn and Manhattan)) and bypass the longtime local communists who were active in Staten Island struggles for over 30 years! When the comrades protested the takeover they were ‘temporary dropped” until they stopped any organizing for solidarity with the Soviet comrades who were oranizing to bring back socialism in the USSR. And this was before the Webbite directive to end communist bolshevik work and become Obamobots and shills for the bourgeois corporate owned Democratic Party !
What is happening in Texas today, has been tried before in California and New York. It has failed with tragic results
and the net loss of experienced loyal bolshevik party members. As the paid Webbite faction stumbles to get “new type of communists” into phony new “controlled clubs” (and they will fail,as they have, because there is no passion & compassion for communism among their internet “members”)
decaying Capitalism will automatically call for bolshevik Leninists communists to continue to build a communist party with historic connection to the international communist movement as exemplified by the Comintern.
Dr. Angelo D’Angelo
Comrade, I should not have to point out that the very intent of this blog is factionalism. I don’t know, or want or need to know, the details that caused leadership to speak to individual members to assess the issues that were happening. I will remind you that you knew coming into the party what *democratic centralism* meant. If your union votes to strike and you voted no (and even if you lose your job, there’s no strike fund, you hate the leadership, etc) that doesn’t entitle you to cross the picket line and say “but I’m not a scab, I’m just misunderstood.”
The very public and incendiary criticisms you are making here do not serve you, your comrades or your allies. They appear all puff and ego. They fuel the ultra-right. Do you want to see yourself quoted on their blogs shaming Sam Webb or the CPUSA or any hardworking comrade? Do you think Gus Hall or Lenin would have shrugged and said nothing? If you want to see action, the place to have that discussion is the Convention. You lose that fight you come back to fight again at the next convention and you make your arguments more compelling. You say that your differences with the CPUSA are irreconcilable. We must fight our common enemies and not each other. Even if you think your strategy was better than the one voted in or selected by the leaders we voted in. The leader selected to replace you may be not as persuasive or a skilled writer or as passionate an activist. If the accusations you are making against him are true, they should be documented and sent to party officials for the good of everyone not paraded on a blog to undermine the validity of the party club you’ve been ousted from. What do you hope to serve by insisting that you are the REAL communist? Or the more valid, ordained by god (and texas) really-o truly-o Communist Party? Democracy does not stop in the room of people whose hands you can count. You agreed to the principles you quote in your blog… and violate in the same breath. Democratic centralism, clearly spelled out.
I want to play your “mindless game show”. BUZZ! I’ll take commie identity crisis for 20 pts. The name you are looking for is democratic socialist. Not real communist. A real communist puts solidarity before ego.
Am I more radical than Sam Webb? Probably. (Sorry, Sam.) But so what? We don’t follow because we’re sheep. We each do our jobs because only a united front, a well oiled machine, can destroy the mechanisms of capitalism. It’s not always exciting to be a cog in the wheel of progress, you’d much rather be a racecar. But a cog is what is needed.
From one cog to another: Brother, tell me your ideas for change not what you hate about another’s.
“We must fight our common enemies and not each other,” G.L. Morrison says.
oooo
Surely, this must be the aim.
It’s hard for the CP to turn away from intrigue against each other internally and fight our common enemies outside of the party, because CP was born in intrigue, grew up in intrigue, collapsed from the Browder intrigue, suffered a long series of splits and intrigues until the odious Correspondents arrived.
Now, there is the intrigue from Mr. Webb and his crew.
A party is supposed to do politics or fight common enemies, as you say. However, sects, in lieu of politics, fight each other. With sects, politics is only a recess between intrigues.
Most of the members of the party are strong and smart, so it is likely that the party will recover from the Webb intrigue, too.
It’s all about the money….the Webbite faction wants to cleave off solid members in order to liquidate and sell the ‘million dollar fishbowl’ in order to finance their retirement….time the truth be said
You preach about factionalism? When I read this I thought surly it was jest! It sounds like your Ego has gotten in the way of the teachings of Lenin. You are helping the ultra right. They are laughing at you right now. It is confusing to see a SCAB call others “bad communists”. If you do not believe in one of the most important aspects of communism itself, then you are a communist in name only. You use this sight it seems like a lost puppy looking for support and showing only your side filled with anger and ill intent for the majority. If those you criticise are as malicious as you say the i wonder why i cant find anything on the web where “they” sling mud at you and your former club. There is something to be said about moral high ground. This sight now seems a joke, a child not getting his or her way acting out. You are hurting the masses and attempting to create more factionalism, not creating some revolution. If you are what you say then act like it, and not a selfish and scorned child. Use the proper channels and “man” or “woman” up.
Only someone who has no experience in the American CP for the last 45 years, can make such such naive statements about how our Party has been run,the workings of democratic centralism, and how to deal with the factional takeover by 20 or so individuals at the top. I suggest that G.L. Morrison (or whatever “his” real name is) do some real studying on the history of opportunist anti-Soviet factional struggles within the American CP and how Foster,Hall and other “real” Marxist-Leninists (sorry but there are real communists and there are those who masqurade as “Communists” for paid financial reasons) fought these bastard agents. Innocense, naivity, and just plain lack of historical knowledge, are not an excuse for supporting the faction that has (to all extent and purposes) destroyed the “Communist-Bolshevik essence ” of our Party.I offer to the comrade a complete list of resource materials written by American and European Marxist-Leninist leaders and/or historians on this subject. Also ,see what the Central Committees of the CPs throughout the world have said about the Webb faction and their anti-democratic tactics in pushing their anti-communist line of liquidation and right opportunism. Only a national chauvanist and believer in “American Exceptionalism” can thumb their nose at the findings of our comrades across the border in Canada and Mexico and around the world. Those who are siding with the anti-communist bourgeoisie are not found among comrades in Houston,Los Angeles,Baltimore,Twin Cities,Staten Island (NYC),Indiana,Canada,Mexico,Germany,Greece,Venezuela,Hungary. Those who want to destroy the “Bolshevik essence” and history of our Party are ,unfortunately, located among the faction that has temporary control of theParty apparatus. But I think G.L.Morrison already knows this and has taken the side which ideologically fits his assigned role.
Thanks for your comment.
Some background information:
Our orginal club did not ask for or even want a split. This was provoked by the national leadership. I know you said you are not interested in facts, but that is what happened. You are the only one who has used the word “hate.” We do not “hate” anyone. We are interested in building a fully functional working class party. Our preference is to remain within the CPUSA, but apparently our criticism of leadership cannot be tolerated. Any organization which quashes open discussion of its policy and expels anyone who disagrees with them will have trouble building any kind of movement.
We hope that our little club can provide a venue for open discussion of problems within the party. We welcome further comments from working class people.

My comments are being censored, so I am attempting to post them from Dave’s laptop and email. Are opposing views not allowed? Only you may be critical but will not allow others to be critical of you and your ultra left views? The double standards here are mind blowing. I assume my comments will continue to be blocked and ignored as they don’t mesh with your own? This is the third time ive tried to exercise my voice on this matter, but I suppose you would be against that right? Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. CASE IN POINT.

So happy that I haven’t been involved with the CPUSA in 2 years. This is pretty ridiculous. I had a lot of fun at YCL events in Chicago and working on the YCL Midwest and National Councils though.
More factionalism on the left, and more top down control on the left as usual. So much for the “democracy” and “grassroots” that the CPUSA throws around.
My major reasons for leaving though are more based around defacto support for authoritarian countries like the DPRK, PRC, Cuba, Vietnam, etc. I’m neither a fan of tailing the dems or the “anti-revisionists”. I can’t fathom how people in the CP claim to support labor/unions here in the US, yet support countries like those listed above that either don’t allow unions at all, or have state controlled unions that do nothing for workers. Anyway, I’m happy I jumped ship before they started throwing people off it.
Sorry we didn’t respond as quickly as you thought we should. Your comment is posted twice now. Although we disagree, we will fight for your right to say whatever you wish. Quashing discussion, expelling loyal members, all in the name of Democratic Centralism, will never build a truly working class organization. Calling your opponents a “lost puppy” and a “selfish and scorned child” does not bolster your argument. Please remain respectful and comradely in your comments in the future.
Thanks for your comment. We need more discussion within and without the party. It is sad that you left the party. We need people who are willing to stand up and fight for the interests of working people. That can only happen if there is open discussion and freedom of expression. We may disagree with you, but you should have the right to express and defend your positions. Don’t give up on the CP!
Democratic centralism refers to “diversity of opinion and unity of action”. When was the last time the CPUSA voted to support a striking union? When was the last time the CPUSA ran a candidate for political office on its own ticket? When was the last time the CPUSA voted to take any action to support working people? We don’t consider Webb’s pontifications about dropping “Leninism” as foreign or any of the other negative party proclamations as having been decided democratically. These articles came out after the last convention and were roundly criticized in this country and around the world. There was no vote taken on closing down the party press, stopping print publications and donating party historical items to the bourgeoisie. You fail to see the distinction between thought and action. Unfortunately, there has been a dearth of both in the CPUSA for many years now. We want to uphold the current party program “The road to Socialism” as well as the current party constitution. CPUSA leadership has been violating both documents for some time now. We would also like to see the mechanisms in the constitution and party program which support democratic discussion enforced vigorously. Instead, we see leadership resorting to mechanisms used by organizations like the Catholic church. I have been vocal in my response to the opinions of the CPUSA leadership and for that I have been excommunicated. That is not democratic centralism, that is centralised democracy.
You had approved other comments made a day after mine. So, yes mine had been brushed aside. And, yes, I call it as I see it. A scab is a scab. There are proper channels.
Democratic centralism is the name given to the principles of internal organization used by Leninist political parties, and the term is used as a synonym for any Leninist policy inside a political party. The democratic aspect of this organizational method describes the freedom of members of the political party to discuss and debate matters of policy and direction, but once the decision of the party is made by majority vote, all members are expected to uphold that decision.
Sorry your skin is so thin. The fact of the matter is that I did approve your comment as soon as I saw it. However, the website did not take the approval right away. I had to approve it again. I don’t know if it was a website error or my error. Nevertheless, it is posted now.
So how does criticizing the opinions of the leadership constitute a failure to uphold decisions made by the party as a whole. If the opinions of leadership are actually the word of God and are infallible, I think membership should be told that in plain, working class language. “Sam said it, I believe it and that does it!” Prayers for us sinners, anyone?
My skin is not so thin, I was using deductive logic. Now you use religious references looking for support. Martyrdom?
What you have been doing goes far beyond criticizing, it is blatant factionalism. There are proper channels for criticism, as you should well know. We get it. You hate Sam and his beliefs. That is your choice of course. I just cant help but wonder why would you even want to be a part of the CPUSA if you so despise it, and its other members who do not follow you to the extreme left.I dont believe any of this huffing and puffing is helpful to the working class. I hope you can find peace within your own beliefs and among your followers and organize in your community for the working class.
Is factionalism the correct way to evaluate the current state of affairs within the CPUSA?Is the desire to continue along a Marxist Leninist course actually factionalism? Are those who desire to see a continuation of the Communist-Bolshevik essence to our Party and follow the teachings of Marx,Engels,Lenin and Stalin all of a sudden pariahs in the Party that gave expression to these solid voices for the revolutionary transformation of society through the vanguard role of the working class.
I like many of our true comrades were raised in the period of the USSR and grown to believe that anti-sovietism was contrary to the advancement of the working class. It has become all to avant garde to now believe in terms that these beliefs are somehow a relic of the past.
It is actually these beliefs that will destroy Communism in this country and hand a complete victory to the right-wing.No longer is there talk of a revolutionary organization built within the working class also taking into consideration the broad terms of the evolving definition of the working class. The democratic Party is not the savior of the working class in this country. We must remember what drives the Democratic Party is still corporate money and power.Until we return to the basics the working class is doomed to Facism.
My point of entry to the CPUSA in 1985 was literally through the beckoning front doors of the Unity Bookstore at Party headquarters in New York City, proudly displaying a CPUSA banner in front of the building, street level displays open to the passing public on 23rd St, Marxist-Leninist literature, colorful books splayed invitingly across the large glass windows, where nearly daily I met actual Communists, purchased and thirstily read the People’s Daily World, Granma, South African, people’s liberation journals, browsed the vast number Soviet academic publications cosmos, accessed the complete Marx, Lenin, Stalin classics, was introduced to the enormous Communist international culture, from Picasso to Neruda to Gorky, and was literally propelled into the deep dialectical materialist world from which I have since never deviated, only naturally accelerated my studies and shared my learning with others, developed into a comrade as I learned and aquired the deep love and undersatnding of the meaning of that word:”Comrade”. The sequence developed with my participation in assisting in producing “People Before Profits” a cable tv series, meeting Communist leaders like Gus Hall, Soviet diplomats, an array of international comrades, local labor leaders, a fascinating and stimulating exposure and discovery of the pulse of the then exciting core of our proudly vanguard party, to which I soon applied and was accepted for membership. Attending and lecturing before classes at the Jefferson-Marxist School was a challenge and delight, the steady stream of cultural/political events offered at the Unity Auditorium, State and national CP meetings, provided comsuming and stimulating settings for compelling interactions and democratic dialogues, learning the principles and practice of democratic centralism, the disciplines and standards expected of Communists, from older experienced, fascinating comrades, and a vibrant YCL as well. With the unfolding of the massive and fierce Reagan assaults, the shocking capitulation of the anti-communist Gorbachev bourgeoisie, the eruption of the COC, the rapid collapse of the Soviets and obscenities of the Yelstin troglodytes, the challenges have been constant and crippling, but not successful. Our Arts, Education and Media Club, in Mahhattan, remained robust and responsibly persisted, only to be attacked and liquidated by the current national leadership 4 years ago, with our 11 active members cast to the various clubs assigned, no explanation offered. I had been approached privately earlier by a State party to change clubs and had forcefully declined, and reported to our club. The assassination that followed was not unexpected. Precisely the sequence I read is now occurring to the fracturing of the Houston Club. An attempt was made to reconstitute a Gus Hall Club in Staten Island, but that effort was blunted and aborted by New York State board members, and has yet to be resolved. So, with my emerging into the orbit of an actual working Marxist-Leninist-Stalinist CPUSA, firm and determined, a leading, functioning example of a vanguard party that has remnants that have survived the unrelenting assaults of our class enemies, I have learned to utilize the tools of dialectical materialst analysis, the understanding of the values used in action against our class enemies, and although the many possibilities revealed to the working class through our bookstore, a daily hard copy newspaper, a Marxist-Leninist Political Affairs journal, a school open for all to be introduced to study our ideological classics, the world communist press, from parties everywhere has been destroyed, eliminated, the tv show long ago abandoned, PA an embarrasment of counterrevolution Kautsyite gibberish, a “leadership” that literally stated that “Leninism is an outmoded, alienating phrase”, yet the pathetic farce of the Houston events are simply evidence that the process continues, capitalism aand its contradictions destroys and calls into existence it’s gravediggers, Communists called to a vanguard position in numbers now small, now greater. This “leadership” will pass, and workers will militantly organize to occupy that revolting vacuum, this is a continuation of constant struggle, and the Workers of the World will Unite! All power to the Soviets!
This is a facebook post made by a Minnesota woman Party member in response to Jarvis Tyner’s most recent article in the P.W.:
“If the ultra right is defeated at the polls new possibilities for real change will open up. Hopefully, labor and peoples movements will be able to take the offensive.
Alan L. Maki
Co-chair,
Lake-of-the-Woods Communist Club
Minnesota
Being able to take the offensive in the struggles for jobs, health care, peace and equality are critical to the survival of the 99%.”
What prevents Tyner and the CPUSA from opening up the offensive right now?
