Thank you, Comrade Angela Davis, for your thoughtful remarks on the auspicious occasion of the 100th anniversary of Henry Winston’s birth.
However, I must counter that Barack Obama is no Henry Winston.
I must also take issue with your statement that …”there can be no doubt that the current upsurge in labor and social justice activism is related to the political climate produced by the election of Obama.”
Although it is remarkable that in this country dominated by racism sponsored by capitalism, an African American man was elected to be President, we should not infer that he has “produced” a political climate which in any way relates to the current upsurge in labor and social justice activism. Indeed, President Obama has brought to bear the full force of the U.S. federal government in numerous repressive actions by law enforcement to suppress and discourage social justice activism.
Police raids recently on Occupy encampments are but one example of such trampling on human rights and social justice.
When Rahm Emmanuel was part of the Obama administration, he declared “F… the AFL-CIO!” This did not serve to encourage organized labor to pursue their interests.
Indeed, prior to Obama’s election, there was much talk among organized labor advocating legislation such as the Employee Free Choice Act and Single Payer Health Care for All. All such talk has been silenced since the election of President Obama.
It is clear that Obama is no messiah for the left.
However, the increasingly sharpened contradictions between labor and capital are the propelling force which has led to the “current upsurge in labor and social justice activism.” It is the current state of the class war which has resulted in the Occupy movement and labor struggles rather than anything one individual has done.
I thoroughly agree with James Thompson regarding his statement that Obama is not a friend of the workingman.
He also is not a friend of the average American who struggles each and every day just to pay the mortgage on his home and automobile.
Obama bailed out the Fat Cats of Wall Street instead of the millions of U.S. homeowners who lost their homes due to the faulty deeds of the big banks!
Obama is also differently not a man of peace as many American people had hoped that he would be, but rather a brutal, hawkish tool of the Military Industrial Complex!
After this country got through lapping up every drop of oil from Iraq, its now actively taking over Afghanistan for the same purpose, greedy Imperialism!
He allows unarmed C.I.A. drones to attack innocent people in Pakistan and Yemen.
He uses such clean tools of death to kill an American citizen in Yemen.
Obama not only is giving Bush Junior a run for his money in the war monger area, but he is turning his unending war machine against Muslim countries all over the globe.
He has no feelings about sending young Americans off to fight for Capitialism and to kill many innocent men, woman, and children in the process.
